With the recent advance in the economic power of China, many westerners may fall for the thinking that China already has some resemblance of "rule of law" which, unfortunately, is still far from the truth. The RTHK Hong Kong Connection series "Defending Justice in China" part 1 and 2 may serve as a good backgrounder to understand the judicial challenges faced by people who were unfortunate to have to deal with the legal system.
note: I should mention that I truly and deeply admire all of the lawyers featured in the episodes (especially the 80 years old Mr. Cheung who has already practiced for 50 years). And if you understand Chinese, I recommend watching the original Chinese edition, otherwise, the English translated version should still be pretty decent.

維 權 律 師 莫 少 平 說 要 了 解 中 國的 「 司 法 獨 立 」 ， 先 要 明 白 中 國 從 法 律 、 憲 法 條 款 、 人 民 法 院 組 織 法 條 款 ， 如 何 沒有 按 司 法 獨 立 原 則 去 設 計 司 法 制 度 。
